Coalition offers six months' parental leave
Posted
The Federal Opposition is working on developing a policy which would provide six months of paid leave for new parents.
The Federal Government's scheme of 18 weeks of leave funded at the federal minimum wage will begin next year, at a cost of $260 million a year.
And Small Business Minister Craig Emerson is already demanding to know how the Opposition would fund the scheme.
"Labor is being economically responsible with its paid parental leave scheme," he said.
"Tony Abbott has now put into the public arena some details of a secret plan that would involve a new tax, a new slug on small business, or would have to be funded out of the Budget.
"Tony Abbott has to say immediately where he's getting the money from.
"In his book he talks about a levy on business, including small business, and the alternative is increased taxes or reduced services for working families."
