Blame me for crash: Police Commissioner
Posted
New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has admitted he is to blame for a car crash that left his wife, Joy, and another person in hospital at the weekend.
Ms Scipione suffered minor injuries when her husband drove into the path of a couple's car when turning right at a stop sign at Peakhurst, in Sydney's south, on Saturday morning.
A woman in the other car had similar injuries. Both were taken to St George Hospital and were discharged a short time later.
The Commissioner has released a statement saying, "I believe I am the at-fault driver and I am as accountable as any other driver in the state."
He told officers at the scene what happened but is yet to provide a formal statement. A police spokesman says that will happen "as soon as practicable".
Acting NSW Opposition Leader Andrew Stoner says Mr Scipione should be congratulated for being honest about his error.
"I think Mr Scipione's unfortunate accident proves that we're all human and we all need to take a lot more care on the roads," he said. "He's done the right thing in terms of sticking his hand up and accepting responsibility as the driver who actually caused it."
Police say speed, alcohol and fatigue were not factors in the crash.
